In celebration of this Sunday’s Super Bowl, which takes place at the home stadium of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, here’s a cocktail from the area. The Brooklyn Cocktail is layered with flavours of tart lemon, bold rye whisky and sweet red vermouth and is finished with maraschino cherry. It’s a super drink to share with friends while cheering on two teams at the top of their game.
1½ oz Alberta Premium rye
¾ oz sweet vermouth
Dash of maraschino liqueur
Twist of lemon to finish
Pour all ingredients except lemon into a mixing glass and stir until well chilled. Strain into a short rocks glass with a few cubes of ice. Twist a long strip of lemon peel over the glass, rub around the rim and place in the drink.
Alberta Premium rye is made from 100-per-cent rye grain, which gives a bolder flavour profile than other whiskies.
If you want to make pitchers of this cocktail for a party, have the lemon peels prepared ahead of time.
And if you’re rooting for the Seahawks and Marshawn Lynch, float a few Skittles — the star running back’s favourite snack — in the drink for good luck!
Whipped Me Up
Creamy and decadent yet light and reviving, this cocktail blends flavours of toffee, caramel, chocolate, coffee, and smooth whipped cream.
1 oz Pinnacle Vodka Whipped
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz espresso
1 oz Baileys
2 oz milk
Pour all ingredients into a snifter glass half filled with ice. Stir briefly and enjoy.
Prepare the espresso first and allow to cool. Add as the final ingredient — this will cause less ice to melt should it still be a little warm.
Kick out the winter chills and remind yourself of a warm breeze, sand between your toes and sunbeams on your face with this summery cocktail.
1 oz Sauza Gold tequila
1 oz Bols Crème de Cacao
4 oz milk or cream
Grated nutmeg to finish
Pour all the ingredients into a shaker tin half filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a margarita glass. Grate a little nutmeg over top of the drink to finish.
When you are using a heavy ingredient such as milk or cream, it’s important to shake a few more times than normal to make sure everything is mixed together.
Feel free to substitute the milk or cream for almond milk or lactose-free milk.
The delicate balance of French oak cognac and orange liqueur is supported by fresh orange and lemon juices in this refreshing drink.
2 oz Courvoisier VS Cognac
1/4oz Bols Triple Sec liqueur
1/8 oz fresh lemon juice
1/4oz simple syrup
2 oz fresh orange juice
Orange peel for garnish
Pour all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a slice of orange peel.
To make simple syrup, combine equal parts hot water and sugar.
Using fresh squeezed juice creates the most flavourful drinks.
