The number of flavoured vodkas has been increasing over the years, and it seems that any flavour you can dream of is now available.

Our cocktail of the week features whipped cream flavoured vodka. Yes, whipped-cream vodka! By combining the sweet taste of whipped cream, tropical pineapple, and fruity orange, we get a sensational drink. The Orange Dreamsicle. A simple and sweet dessert martini.

Ingredients

1 oz Pinnacle Whipped Vodka

2 oz orange juice

2 oz pineapple juice

Garnish with half an orange wheel

Method

Ice a martini glass and set aside while making the drink. In a shaker filled with ice, pour in all the ingredients. Shake vigorously. Discard the ice from the martini glass. Strain the shaken mix into the now chilled glass. Place the orange garnish on the rim.

Tips

When using juices, always use ones Not From Concentrate when possible. The saying, “The better quality the ingredients, the better tasting the end result” is true.

Space has long captured our imagination and has been a driving force in bringing the world together. That combination has helped lead to the International Space Station and its first Canadian commander, astronaut Chris Hadfield. In honour of the spirit of collaboration, this week’s feature is a mix of Canadian prairie wheat vodka, sugar cane rum, zesty lemon, and sweet passion fruit. So shake up this cocktail, lie back and relax staring at the stars.

Ingredients

½ oz Banff Ice Vodka

½ oz white rum

½ oz lemon juice

dash of passion fruit juice

Garnish with a lemon wedge

Method

Pour all ingredients into a shaker glass and shake well. Strain in a small glass with new ice. Place lemon wedge garnish.

A new year is nearly upon us, which is a good time to celebrate with a  brilliantly refreshing cocktail, Anastasia’s Garden. Flavours of sweet  strawberries and fragrant basil combine with premium vodka and some carbonation  to dance on your tongue. Pressing refresh never tasted so good.

Ingredients

1oz Russian Standard vodka

4 basil leaves

3 ripe strawberries

3oz soda (or champagne)

Garnish with a basil leaf

Method

Cut the tops off the strawberries and place directly into a glass. Give the  basil leaves a smack to awaken them and place on top of the strawberries. Muddle  until the berries are all pressed. Fill with ice and pour in the vodka. Top with  soda or champagne and stir gently. Place a basil leaf or sprig for garnish.  Enjoy!

Tips

The carbonation not only gives your taste buds some fun, it also helps  release the fresh fruit and herb aromas.

If using a champagne, choose a dry or Brut champagne. Another substitution is  sparkling white wine

Cossack Martini

This martini is inspired by a truly Russian vodka made in St. Petersburg. Smooth, clear Russian Standard Vodka and sweet blackberry jam are balanced by the tartness of fresh lemon to create a simply great tasting martini.

Ingredients

2 oz Russian Standard Vodka

1 to 2 tsps. blackberry jam

½ oz lemon juice

Blackberries for garnish

Method

Fill a martini glass with ice and put it aside to allow it to chill while we mix the drink. In a mixing glass, spoon in blackberry jam, add ice, Russian Standard Vodka and lemon juice. Cap with a shaker and shake vigorously. Discard the ice from the now chilled martini glass. Strain drink into glass. Slide one blackberry into the martini. Place three berries on a cocktail pick and rest it on the edge of the glass to garnish.

Tips

For an elegant touch, after the liquid is strained into the chilled martini glass, top with sparkling white wine. This will add some bubbles and sweetness to the drink without lowering the martini’s alcohol strength.

Russian Standard Vodka is made from winter wheat. It is ideal vodka for allowing other flavours shine through.

You can play with this recipe by using different jams to create a new martini.
